Research
Our three core research questions
In our group, we explore the interplay of digital technologies and transformation, keeping a holistic view of organizations, ranging from processes to business models and management styles. Here, we take a strong information systems perspective focusing on the socio-technical interplay of humans and technology. Through practice-oriented research, we aim to identify, develop, and generate direct benefits for society, organizations, and individuals. Overarching, we examine questions on three (mutually interacting) levels:
- Guide the organization: How can digital transformation be managed to leverage technologies for innovation and competitive advantage?
- Guide the process: How can automation and analytics technology be deployed to enhance and optimize business processes?
- Guide the technology: How can (lightweight) technology be leveraged to optimize value for the organization?

Digital Transformation
Guide the organization: How can digital transformation be managed to leverage technologies for innovation and competitive advantage?
Digital transformation is a dynamic field in information systems research that focuses on the integration of digital technologies (mostly) into organizations.
We explore how innovative technologies like lightweight technologies, big data analytics, AI, and IoT can reshape business processes, decision-making, and value creation. To fully harness the potential of these technologies and support the widespread adoption of digital innovations, a rethinking of organizational culture, structure, and skills is mostly necessary. This research area investigates the challenges, opportunities, and social impacts of digital transformation, aiming to guide organizations in leveraging these technologies for innovation and competitive advantage as well as enable organizations to navigate the complexities of digital transformations effectively.

Business Process Automation & Mining
Guide the process: How can automation and analytics technology be deployed to enhance and optimize business processes?
Business Process Automation and Mining is a forward-thinking research domain dedicated to revolutionizing business processes through the strategic integration of automation, data analysis, and artificial intelligence.
This interdisciplinary research field leverages cutting-edge technologies and methodologies (e.g. RPA, workflow management systems, process mining techniques) to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and improve overall business performance. The primary objective of research in Business Process Automation and Mining is to deliver actionable insights and practical solutions for optimizing and managing business processes. It is pivotal in shaping the future of business operations, driving technological advancement, and fostering sustainable growth and innovation across industries. Through continued exploration and development, this research field holds the promise of transforming how businesses operate, compete, and thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Lightweight Technologies
Guide the technology: How can (lightweight) technology be leveraged to optimize value for the organization?
Lightweight IT is an emerging research area that emphasizes agile and flexible IT solutions, which are designed to meet the dynamic needs of modern organizations.
This research field focuses on the development and deployment of lightweight technologies, such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA), which streamline processes and enhance operational efficiency without the complexity of traditional IT systems. A key aspect of Lightweight IT is the integration and management of these technologies in a manner that is both effective and sustainable. In particular, Lightweight IT governance examines the frameworks and practices necessary for organizations to oversee these initiatives responsibly. This includes addressing critical concerns such as data security, privacy, compliance, and risk management.
The primary goal of this research area is to strike a balance between agility and governance, enabling organizations to rapidly adapt to changes and leverage new technologies while ensuring that such adaptations are well-managed and aligned with business goals. This balance helps organizations maximize the benefits of Lightweight IT, driving innovation and efficiency without compromising on governance standards.
